The first two years of MSISS are devoted to laying down the foundations for the senior years. In your third and fourth years, you will have the opportunity to choose between certain options and specialise in certain areas. For this year and next however, the course material is predetermined, the only choice available to you being whether or not you wish to take an optional language module. The first year in MSISS is comprised of the following modules:
Introduction to Management Science
Gives an introduction to management science/problem solving and covers a variety of Operations Research techniques at a basic level.Statistical Analysis
Introduces fundamental statistical concepts and basic techniques again in a problem solving context.Engineering Mathematics I & II
Provides the basic mathematical underpinnings required for the other quantitative modules.Computer Science 1
Covers the fundamental concepts underlying computer programming and introduces the C++ programming language.Introduction to Economics
Presents the basic vocabulary of micro and macro economics.Introduction to Organisation and Management
Gives an overview of business and management. This will provide a foundation for later business and financial topics.Software Laboratories 1
Teaches the basics of end-user computing.All modules (except Software Laboratories 1) are assessed by end of year examination and many have assessment of exercises and/or project work as well. Software laboratories are assessed by continual assessment only.
Most modules, especially in the senior years, make extensive use of microcomputers. Expert advice and assistance is available to students all through the four years of the degree. The School of Systems and Data Studies is committed to providing appropriate software and hardware support and there is a continuing programme of investment in new equipment. There are several public access computer rooms in the College.
